The senior editor is responsible for the execution and hands-on management of assigned client content programs and plays a editorial leadership role with both clients and Tendo content team peers. Working closely with Tendo executives and senior leadership, the senior editor’s responsibilities include planning and managing content development; writing, editing and producing web, rich media, and social content; recruiting and managing freelance writers; and advising and making recommendations to clients regarding strategies for engaging audiences with content. Candidate must have B2B experience and understanding of enterprise IT markets, products, and buying audiences.
Specific Responsibilities
Content Creation and Editorial Leadership
- Assume lead editorial role on assigned projects by assessing client needs and formulating Tendo engagement solutions in collaboration with Tendo executives and senior leadership.
- Understand client goals and audience and recommend content angles, formats, types, channels, etc. that will result in engagement.
- Develop content plans that include audiences, goals, schedules, content outlines, content maps, social content plans, etc.
- Execute on plan by writing and/or assigning articles, rich media and/or social content; editing according to client style guide; managing client review cycles; incorporating changes; submitting content to client content management systems; reviewing staged content, proofreading, and authorizing content launch.
- Strategize and coordinate content integration, linking, and calls to action to maximize share of conversation.
- Copyedit content and establish and maintain standards of voice, tone, and quality for various communications mediums.
- Develop headlines, decks, pull quotes, direct-mail copy, and other types of content as needed to promote and amplify content in a variety of channels.
Project Management
- In collaboration with Tendo executives and senior leadership, define project goals, approach, and scope. Manage editorial budgets for assigned projects; understand budget before project kickoff and communicate allowed hours to project team.
- Create and plan innovative client programs that leverage new communications technologies and mediums.
- Package ideas in effective, professional, engaging PowerPoint presentations.
- Manage editorial production processes as needed.
- Act as the lead client contact on projects, defining a meeting cadence and status delivery appropriate to the size of project.
- Work with in-house, freelance, and client design and production teams to assist with art concepts, photos, and illustrations as needed.
- Manage copy flow from editorial to production and publishing.
- Customize all standard Tendo resource documents for the client project; ensure that resources are available as needed in the process schedule.
- Proactively suggest new ways to improve content quality and process efficiency.
Client Relations
- Effectively lead and manage client editorial communication; maintain and ensure clear and focused communication with client, including confirmation of key actions and next steps, expectation setting, and communicating process.
- Provide outstanding customer service to all Tendo clients; look for opportunities to add value.
- Communicate clearly in all client interaction, including email, phone, and face-to-face meetings.
- Document/confirm client communication in writing according to Tendo standards.
- Proactively communicate with clients as required; anticipate challenges and suggest solutions.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 10 years of editorial experience; digital content experience required.
- Experience/background/understanding of and enthusiasm for tech-specific markets, products, and topics.
- Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, including clear client communication, sharp editorial instincts, and copyediting proficiency.
- Terrific client relations skills; the successful candidate will understand how to navigate diplomatically in complex environments, build consensus through influence rather than authority, and deliver great customer service.
- Proven ability to follow and shape stories at various stages of development; keen judgment of unique angles and newsworthiness of editorial.
- Project management skills; ability to meet deadlines and balance multiple project schedules.
- Independent work style, ability to plan and execute with little direction, and the ability to take initiative are a must.
- Comfortable collaborating with others, thrive in a fast-paced environment, and enjoy a diversity of tasks and projects.
The Senior Director cultivates and grows client relationships and contributes to the development of account plans and new business proposals. You will have P&L responsibility for assigned client engagements, which includes responsibility for revenue expansion and achieving specific budget and revenue targets.
While this role has management and leadership responsibility, it is also deeply hands on, requiring an individual to “do” as well as direct: developing client strategies, preparing and presenting deliverables, and guiding overall solution development.
As a content leader, you should be adept at providing active client leadership and consulting “in the room” based on your experience and knowledge of content strategy best practices. You’ll also be a catalyst who defines and adapts emergent content strategy best practices into Tendo’s POV, client recommendations, and deliverables.
Also, since many of Tendo’s clients are B2B technology companies, the Senior Director must have a deep appreciation of, and curiosity about, enterprise IT technologies and buying audiences.
Specific Responsibilities
Digital Content Strategy Execution and Leadership
- Serve as content strategy lead on client engagements. Provide active client leadership by representing Tendo content experience POV and applying best practices to client engagements.
- Develop and manage the creation of quality content strategy deliverables, including content maturity assessments and strategic roadmaps, audits and gap analyses, taxonomy and personalization strategies, campaign frameworks, style and tone of voice guides, CMS documentation and training, etc.
- Develop comprehensive information architectures, content models, wireframes and business rules for meaningful content experiences and personalization opportunities.
- Establish content goals and performance metrics with a view to ongoing content optimization.
- Proactive exploration of AI tools and active leadership of the development and considered experimentation of relevant AI use cases and methodologies. Ongoing leadership and cross-team collaboration in the responsible internal and client-facing use of AI for improved and optimized content experience.
- Conduct current state analyses; competitive analyses; and market, buyer, and content analyses through first-hand research, interviews, and third-party sources.
- Identify and document the content needs of key audiences, across all stages of the customer journey, in the form of content-actionable personas and journeys.
- Depending on project scope, contribute to content deliverables such as copywriting, editing, interviewing, asset creation (blogs, infographics, videos, podcasts, social content, etc.). Establish and maintain quality standards on all assigned accounts.
- Deliver, manage, and evolve highest standard of quality for all Tendo client deliverables, accountable for quality of work for all assigned clients.
- Provide support across a breadth of content engagements as required; define and execute effective strategies based on client goals.
Team Management and Thought Leadership
- Develop and manage full-time and contract content strategy staff, ensuring they are trained in Tendo best practices for content strategy, client leadership, and content development and execution on multiple platforms (e.g., interactive, video, podcast, graphic, etc.).
- Coach and teach, deliver honest timely feedback, and manage performance programs for content strategists and assigned team.
- Set goals and establish focus, monitor progress, and course correct as needed. Conduct initial three-month and annual performance evaluations.
- Define and implement workflow and process efficiencies to enable service delivery at scale.
- Identify, document, and socialize processes for different deliverables and coordinate with VP on best practices.
- Identify and develop business rationale, and propose the development of new and relevant content service offerings.
- Cultivate knowledge and expertise within one or more domains of content marketing or content strategy (to be defined by Tendo executive team)
- Share knowledge and learnings via presentation to colleagues, presentations to Tendo staff twice per year
- Articulate thought leadership on Tendo’s blog and in client communications on a quarterly basis
- Identify and pitch opportunities to present thought leadership at industry conferences and other relevant speaking engagements.
Client Leadership
- Identify and define Tendo engagement opportunities within assigned client organizations and among key client stakeholders.
- Leverage professional network and past client relationships, introduce Tendo capabilities as appropriate, and help nurture and develop Tendo new business opportunities among key Tendo prospects.
- Provide insight into account expansion strategies existing Tendo clients in partnership with Account Services leaders
- Contribute to new business development in support of revenue growth and expansion goals established by executive leadership.
- Contribute to the development of proposals with a clear articulation of project goals and objectives, Tendo approach, key activities and deliverables, and utilization estimates.
- Represent Tendo content strategy and experience perspective in client presentations and launch meetings.
Engagement Leadership
- Proactively identify and apply creative solutions to client challenges and program execution (use of new or alternative content types, alternate approaches for presenting concepts that will drive increased readership and engagement, etc.).
- Manage and provide hands-on project execution leadership. Supervise delivery team members, ensuring all understand their roles and have the resources they need to succeed, defining a project schedule and clarifying process and deliverables as needed
- Deliver assigned projects on schedule and on budget.
- Create and lead presentation of client deliverables and recommendations.
Qualifications
In addition, the ideal candidate will have outstanding client-relations and presentation skills, handle stress with grace and tact, have a flair for wordsmithing, and possess an excellent sense of humor.
Specific Experience and Competencies
- Experience working on complex content strategy engagements with multiple workstreams, stakeholders and team members within enterprise scale, complex B2B organizations.
- Experience managing budgets with multiple cost centers and delivering projects on time and on budget
- Demonstrated knowledge of evolving landscape of AI tools, technologies, models and use cases relevant to the practice, process and discipline of content experience and digital and content strategy.
- Knowledge of SEO principles and the ability to recommend, guide and/or incorporate SEO best practices.
- Mastery of MS Word and Excel.
- Mastery of MS PPT, and/or Keynote.
- Proficiency in project management and project scheduling program such as MS Project or Team Gantt, Smartsheet, Asana, etc.
- Ability to work independently in Adobe Creative Suite.
- Experience with and understanding of content management systems such as Adobe AEM, Sitecore, WordPress, etc.
- Experience with web and content inventory and analytics tools, such as CAT, Google Analytics, Screaming Frog, BrightEdge, etc.
